Ukraine, Russia and the United States are preparing for a first-of-its-kind trilateral peace dialogue aimed at advancing conflict resolution in the war that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that technical-level representatives from all three countries are scheduled to meet in the United Arab Emirates on January 23–24 for discussions focused on ending hostilities and addressing key security and political issues.

Zelenskyy made the announcement during the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he also held bilateral talks with U.S. officials, describing the steps toward trilateral engagement as “good” progress. U.S. President Donald Trump’s team is reported to be coordinating with both Kyiv and Moscow ahead of the talks, which will bring together negotiators to hash out frameworks on ceasefire terms, security guarantees and post-war recovery mechanisms.

The initiative marks a notable shift in diplomatic strategy, as past peace plans have often stalled over issues such as territorial control and security arrangements. Moscow has been more reserved in its public comments, with no detailed Russian position released ahead of the scheduled meeting. Observers say the trilateral format could present both opportunities and challenges given the complexity of the conflict and entrenched positions on all sides.
