Severe flooding in Bangkok after days of heavy rainfall has affected approximately 329,000 households, or around 700,000 people, according to Bangkok authorities. Flooding has disrupted roads, neighbourhoods and transportation across the Thai capital.
Heavy rain over the weekend caused water levels to rise rapidly, particularly in eastern parts of Bangkok. Some areas experienced more than 300 mm of accumulated rainfall during the prolonged downpour.
Although rainfall has eased, several roads and communities remain flooded. Authorities are operating pumps and floodgates and lowering water levels in major canals to accelerate drainage. Nearly 7,000 people have been staying in temporary shelters, while emergency teams continue assisting vulnerable residents.
The latest government assessment says Bangkok’s standing floodwater could take two to three days to clear, provided there is no additional heavy rainfall. Officials are also preparing longer-term flood-prevention and recovery measures.
The flooding is part of a wider disaster across Thailand. As of September 29, flooding was affecting 29 provinces and Bangkok, with more than 2.6 million people affected nationwide and 23 deaths reported since September 16.
Authorities continue to warn residents about possible flash floods, river overflow and landslides, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways.
