Communities in northern Cebu continued to deal with widespread destruction on Friday following the magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck near Bogo City late on September 30.
As of the morning of October 3, the Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported 68 confirmed deaths and 559 injured, while noting that casualty figures were still being validated. More than 366,000 people from about 80,600 families had been affected. GMA Network
Thousands of homes and public facilities were damaged. Authorities reported 5,013 damaged houses, including 658 that were totally destroyed. Roads, bridges, electricity supplies and communications were also disrupted in affected communities. GMA Network
The danger had not ended. PHIVOLCS reported 3,685 aftershocks by early October 3, ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 5.1. Some survivors were sleeping outdoors because of fears that damaged buildings could collapse during further tremors. GMA Network
Education was particularly badly affected. Officials said all 38 schools in Bogo City sustained damage, and authorities shifted students to modular or home-based learning while engineers inspected school buildings. Across affected regions, the Department of Education reported thousands of classrooms with major damage.
