British police arrested five men near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire on Sunday, September 27, after authorities received a report about three suspicious vehicles apparently travelling towards the military air base. The men were initially arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and were later detained on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act.

The incident began at around 12:45 a.m. when police received information about the vehicles. Armed officers responded and arrested the five men in the nearby Whelford area. Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigation, which remains in its early stages.

Army explosive-ordnance specialists were deployed to examine the vehicles, while a 400-metre security cordon was established around the area. Around 85 households were evacuated as a precaution during the operation. Police later said they believed the incident was contained.

RAF Fairford has been used by the US Air Force, including for military operations connected with the conflict involving Iran. This has led investigators to examine whether there could be an Iran-related motive. However, British authorities have not confirmed any Iranian involvement or a motive for the arrests. Officials have urged the public not to speculate while the investigation continues.

US President Donald Trump said the suspects had been under investigation and claimed they were intending to cause significant damage. Those claims have not been independently established by British police, who have not publicly confirmed what the suspects allegedly intended to target.
