Chennai has reported a rise in fever cases in recent weeks, prompting the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to strengthen dengue surveillance and mosquito-control measures across the city. During the first 10 days of September, more than 2,000 fever cases were reported, of which 140 were confirmed as dengue.
The increase comes as Chennai experiences intermittent rainfall, which can create stagnant-water breeding sites for mosquitoes. Adyar, Anna Nagar and Valasaravakkam have recorded relatively higher numbers of dengue cases, according to surveillance data.
The GCC has intensified house-to-house fever surveillance, source reduction and inspections of residential areas, vacant plots, construction sites and public institutions. Around 3,700 mosquito-control workers have been deployed across the city’s 15 zones. Private hospitals have also been asked to provide daily information on fever cases.
Officials have stressed that the increase in fever cases does not necessarily indicate a dengue outbreak, as other infections including influenza A, rhinovirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also circulating.
