Chennai has recorded 4,592 dengue cases so far in 2026, prompting the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to continue intensive mosquito-control and disease-surveillance measures across the city.
According to Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Darez Ahamed, 1,293 dengue cases were reported in September alone. A total of 16,254 dengue tests have been conducted in Chennai this year. Officials said no dengue deaths have been reported in the city so far in 2026.
Despite the high number of infections, officials say the situation is beginning to stabilise. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said Chennai had been reporting around 100 cases per day during September, but daily numbers recently dropped to 46 cases and then 39 cases.
The civic body is continuing preventive operations rather than reducing them. Around 3,703 mosquito-control workers have been deployed, while more than 100 fever camps are being conducted every day. Approximately 1,250 machines are being used for larvicide spraying, with drone-assisted operations also being conducted over selected water bodies.
Authorities have been particularly focused on eliminating stagnant water and mosquito-breeding sites following intermittent rainfall. The GCC recently identified hundreds of breeding hotspots and has continued cleaning, larvicide application and fogging in vulnerable areas.
The Corporation also imposed around ₹7.2 lakh in fines during September on establishments, organisations and households that failed to eliminate mosquito-breeding sources despite warnings.
With the northeast monsoon period approaching, health officials have urged residents to prevent water from accumulating in containers, tyres and other objects around homes and workplaces and to seek medical attention for persistent fever.
