Chennai is set to get 11 modern, air-conditioned bus shelters under a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at improving comfort and safety for commuters.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has signed agreements with seven private companies to construct and maintain the upgraded shelters. The project is being launched as a pilot initiative at several high-footfall locations across the city.
The new shelters will feature air-conditioned waiting areas, heat-insulating roofing, CCTV surveillance, improved lighting, free Wi-Fi, USB mobile charging ports and digital bus-route information displays. Accessible ramps will also be incorporated to make the facilities easier for wheelchair users.
According to officials, the private companies involved will maintain the shelters for three years. If the pilot project proves successful, similar AC bus shelters could be introduced at more busy locations across Chennai in the future.
