Chennai is set to significantly improve its drinking-water infrastructure, with North Chennai and surrounding suburban areas planned to receive round-the-clock water supply.
The initiative is linked to a major expansion of the city’s water infrastructure, including a proposed 400-million-litres-per-day (MLD) desalination plant at Minjur. The project is expected to strengthen water availability for areas including North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri and Minjur.
The move aims to reduce dependence on irregular water supplies, private tankers and household water storage. Officials expect the improved infrastructure to provide a more reliable and equitable supply as Chennai’s population and water demand continue to grow.
The development is part of broader efforts to modernise Chennai’s urban water network and improve access to safe drinking water across the city and its expanding suburbs.
