KOCHI — Kochi Airport authorities, in coordination with wildlife enforcement officials, have arrested a couple attempting to smuggle 11 rare and endangered birds from Thailand. The seizure has triggered a formal wildlife crime investigation.
Officials said the birds, including species listed under national and international wildlife protection laws, were being carried in concealed containers inside the passengers’ luggage. The couple allegedly intended to sell the birds in the domestic market, circumventing legal import and conservation regulations.
The arrested individuals have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act and relevant sections of customs law. Authorities are examining the source and intended destination of the birds and working to determine whether this case is part of a larger smuggling network.
The rescued birds have been handed over to the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department for proper care and rehabilitation. Wildlife officials emphasized the seriousness of wildlife smuggling and urged travelers to comply with legal procedures to protect endangered species.
Officials also warned that violations carry strict penalties, including heavy fines and imprisonment, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb illegal wildlife trade at airports and other transport hubs.
