Chennai police have registered a case against a doctor at a private fertility clinic in Kolathur and a couple after a 27-year-old woman alleged that her newborn son was handed over to the couple and was later not returned. Police say the complainant’s accounts contain some contradictions, and the circumstances are still under investigation.

The complainant, K. Meghala of Chengalpattu, told police that she approached the clinic during the seventh month of her pregnancy after facing financial difficulties. She delivered a baby boy on July 29, 2025. According to her complaint, hospital staff initially said the newborn required isolation and she was able to see him only about 10 days later.

Meghala alleged that a doctor subsequently introduced her to a childless couple from Tiruvottiyur and proposed that the couple look after the baby for three months. She said she agreed on the understanding that her son would then be returned.

When Meghala later sought the child’s return, the couple allegedly refused. She subsequently approached police, leading to the case against the doctor and couple. A preliminary inquiry cited by The New Indian Express indicated that investigators had not established that money changed hands between the parties, while another local report carries a conflicting allegation involving payment.

Police are now investigating how and under what circumstances the child was transferred, meaning allegations against the clinic, doctor and couple have not yet been proven.
