Thiruvananthapuram, October 6, 2026: Kerala is bracing for another spell of heavy rain as weather systems over and around the Arabian Sea continue to influence conditions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning in Kerala on Monday.
A yellow alert has been issued in nine districts — Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad — as isolated areas could experience heavy rainfall.
According to the latest weather assessment, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is present over the Arabian Sea near Kerala, while another circulation is located over northern Tamil Nadu. A trough extending from the Gulf of Mannar towards central Maharashtra is also influencing the regional weather pattern. These systems are expected to keep rain active over parts of Kerala in the coming days.
The IMD’s October 6 warning indicates heavy rain along with thunderstorms and lightning for Kerala. Thunderstorm and lightning warnings continue for October 7 and 8, while another heavy-rain warning is listed for October 9 and 10.
Coastal areas also require caution. The IMD’s coastal bulletin forecasts widespread rain and thunderstorms along both the north and south Kerala coasts, with visibility potentially becoming poor during intense spells. A swell-surge alert has also been issued for the Thiruvananthapuram coast from Kappil to Pozhiyoor, with waves of around 0.8 to 1.1 metres forecast during the alert period.
Residents are advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and intense rain, particularly in low-lying, hilly and other vulnerable areas. Motorists should also exercise caution as sudden downpours can reduce visibility and cause localised waterlogging.
With unsettled weather expected to continue, people are advised to follow official IMD and disaster-management updates for changes to district-level warnings.
