The supply of Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh’s Kandaleru reservoir to Chennai is expected to stop within the next two to three days, as reservoir storage has fallen significantly. Currently, only about 40 cusecs of water is being released towards Chennai.
Between May and September, Chennai received around 3 TMC of Krishna water, below the usual 4–5 TMC received during this period. The reduction is linked to poor rainfall in Andhra Pradesh and the need to reserve water for the state’s second crop season.
Officials said the release could resume if the Kandaleru reservoir receives sufficient inflows following rainfall in its catchment areas. Chennai’s own reservoirs currently hold around 5 TMC, which officials estimate can meet the city’s requirements for about five months.
However, authorities remain concerned that a weak northeast monsoon could create water-supply challenges in Chennai during summer 2027.
