The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially opens today at UN Headquarters in New York, bringing countries together for a new year of international diplomacy and cooperation. The session will be chaired by Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, who begins his one-year term as President of the General Assembly.

This year’s session is being held under the theme โ€œRestoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that works for all.โ€ Discussions will focus on global peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, human rights and strengthening international cooperation.

The major General Debate is scheduled to begin on September 22, when heads of state and government leaders will gather in New York to present their priorities and address major international challenges.

The session comes at a particularly challenging time for the international community, with ongoing conflicts, economic pressures and concerns over global cooperation. Several high-level meetings later in September will address climate action, rising sea levels, pandemic preparedness and sustainable development.
