The Philippines conducted a nationwide school safety drill on Thursday as authorities moved to strengthen emergency preparedness following recent shooting incidents involving schools.

At Carlos F. Gonzales High School in Bulacan province, students and teachers practiced emergency lockdown procedures after alarms signaled a simulated security threat. Participants followed safety protocols by securing classrooms, turning off lights, taking cover and remaining quiet until authorities declared the situation safe.

The nationwide exercise was organized by the Department of Education (DepEd) in coordination with security agencies and emergency responders. The drills also covered evacuation procedures, student and staff headcounts, first-aid response and psychosocial support.

Officials emphasized that the exercise was designed to improve preparedness without creating unnecessary fear or trauma among students. The government adopted child-centered and trauma-informed procedures, avoiding hyper-realistic reenactments of violent incidents.

The safety drills come after recent school shooting incidents renewed public discussion about school security, firearm safety and the protection of young people.

School officials said regular emergency exercises can help students, teachers and authorities develop better coordination and respond more effectively during real emergencies.
