Pacific Island nations are calling for greater international climate funding as leaders gather at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, warning that rising sea levels and increasingly severe weather are already threatening communities across the region.
Leaders said small island nations are facing flooding, coastal erosion and other climate-related damage while struggling to secure enough money for adaptation and resilience projects. Communities in low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable as extreme weather and rising oceans increasingly affect homes, infrastructure and livelihoods.
The summit has also highlighted concerns that growing geopolitical competition in the Pacific could overshadow the region’s most urgent challenge: climate change. Pacific leaders are seeking to turn international interest in the strategically important region into meaningful financial support for climate resilience.
Regional representatives have emphasized the need for faster and more accessible funding, including support through initiatives such as the Pacific Resilience Facility. Leaders argue that vulnerable island communities need direct assistance to prepare for the worsening effects of climate change.
