Traffic congestion along Chennai’s Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), the city’s major IT corridor, has worsened significantly, causing frustration among thousands of daily commuters. Residents and office-goers have reported longer travel times due to a combination of infrastructure works, traffic violations, and increasing vehicle numbers.

According to traffic officials, ongoing metro rail construction activities at several locations along the corridor have reduced road space and created bottlenecks during peak hours. Illegal parking, unauthorized U-turns, and wrong-side driving have further aggravated the situation, leading to frequent traffic jams across key stretches of the route.

OMR serves as a vital link connecting Chennai’s technology parks, residential neighborhoods, and educational institutions. As a result, congestion on the corridor affects a large number of employees working in the IT sector, many of whom spend hours commuting each day.

Motorists have urged authorities to improve traffic management, enforce stricter regulations against violations, and accelerate ongoing infrastructure projects. Several commuters also called for better public transport connectivity to reduce dependence on private vehicles.

Officials stated that measures are being planned to ease congestion, including enhanced traffic monitoring, stricter enforcement against illegal parking, and coordination with metro construction teams. However, commuters may continue to face delays until major infrastructure works along the corridor are completed.
