The 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is bringing world leaders together in New York to address major international challenges and strengthen cooperation between countries. The high-level week, held from 22–29 September 2026, has focused on peace and security, climate change, public health, sustainable development, artificial intelligence and reform of international institutions.
More than 150 world leaders took part in speeches and diplomatic discussions during the General Assembly. A recurring theme has been the need for countries to work together on problems that cross national borders, including conflicts, climate risks and AI governance. At the same time, leaders have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the UN and called for reforms to make international cooperation more representative and effective.
The UN’s agenda has also included a high-level meeting on pandemic preparedness, discussions on the threats posed by rising sea levels, and efforts to advance sustainable development. On 29 September, the Assembly is holding a high-level plenary meeting focused on the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
