The National Highways Authority of India has approved an additional ₹160 crore for the development of the Kochi–Munnar National Highway 85 project, providing a major boost to Kerala’s road infrastructure and connectivity plans. The newly sanctioned amount is expected to accelerate construction activities and improve travel conditions along one of the state’s most important tourism and transportation corridors.
Officials stated that the additional funding will be used for road widening, land acquisition, drainage construction, retaining walls, slope protection, and safety improvement works across various stretches of the highway. Authorities believe the move will help complete pending works faster and improve overall traffic movement between Kochi and the hill district of Idukki.
National Highway 85 serves as a crucial route connecting Kochi to Munnar, a major tourist destination famous for tea plantations, hill stations, and eco-tourism activities. The road is frequently used by tourists, local residents, commercial transport vehicles, and agricultural traders. However, several portions of the highway currently face problems such as traffic congestion, narrow roads, damaged sections, and landslide risks during the monsoon season.
Infrastructure officials said the improved highway network is expected to reduce travel time, strengthen road safety, and support tourism growth in central Kerala. Better connectivity could also benefit businesses involved in hospitality, agriculture, and transportation sectors in Ernakulam and Idukki districts.
Local residents and tourism operators welcomed the announcement, stating that smoother road conditions would encourage more visitors to Munnar and nearby destinations. Many also stressed the need for timely project completion to avoid prolonged traffic disruptions caused by ongoing construction.
Meanwhile, highway authorities have assured that environmental protection measures and safety monitoring will be prioritized, especially in ecologically sensitive and hilly regions along the route. Officials added that regular project reviews and coordination meetings would continue to ensure faster progress.
The additional ₹160 crore allocation is being viewed as a significant step toward strengthening Kerala’s transportation infrastructure and supporting long-term regional economic development.
