Illegal waste dumping along the Madavana National Highway service road in Kochi has emerged as a serious public health and environmental concern ahead of the monsoon season. Residents and commuters have raised complaints over the increasing accumulation of garbage along the roadside, warning that the situation could worsen significantly once heavy rains begin across the city.
According to local residents, heaps of plastic waste, food leftovers, construction debris, and household garbage have been dumped at multiple points along the busy service road over the past several weeks. The growing waste piles have reportedly created foul odors, attracted stray animals, and increased mosquito breeding in nearby areas.
Public health experts warned that stagnant water mixed with garbage during the monsoon could lead to the spread of waterborne diseases, including dengue fever, leptospirosis, and gastrointestinal infections. Residents living near the affected areas expressed concern that blocked drainage channels caused by dumped waste may also result in severe waterlogging during heavy rainfall.
The Madavana stretch is an important traffic corridor connecting various parts of Kochi, and commuters have complained that the waste accumulation is affecting both cleanliness and road safety.
