India Meteorological Department has issued yellow alerts for heavy rainfall in nine districts across Kerala as the state prepares for the early arrival of the southwest monsoon. According to weather officials, conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for monsoon onset, with continuous rainfall expected over the coming days.
Districts including Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Idukki, Malappuram, Kasaragod, Thrissur, and Pathanamthitta are under yellow alert due to the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Authorities warned that intense rain could lead to waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and minor flooding in low-lying areas.
The weather department stated that Kerala may witness the official arrival of the southwest monsoon earlier than usual this year. Meteorologists observed strong cloud activity and favorable wind patterns over the Arabian Sea, indicating advancing monsoon conditions along the Kerala coast.
Local administrations across the state have intensified preparedness measures ahead of the expected heavy rainfall. Civic bodies have begun large-scale drainage cleaning, canal desilting, and emergency response planning in flood-prone regions. Disaster management teams, fire force units, and health departments have also been placed on alert.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough weather conditions and strong coastal winds. Authorities also cautioned residents in hilly regions and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during periods of continuous rainfall.
Meanwhile, the rainfall has brought significant relief from the intense summer heat experienced across Kerala in recent weeks. Farmers in many districts welcomed the showers, expecting positive effects on agriculture and water availability before the full monsoon season begins.
Health officials have also urged the public to take precautions against waterborne diseases, mosquito breeding, and contamination of drinking water sources during the rainy season. Residents have been advised to follow official weather updates and emergency instructions issued by local authorities.
The state government is expected to continue monitoring the weather situation closely as Kerala enters one of its most crucial monsoon preparation periods.
