International Podcast Day is being observed worldwide today, celebrating podcast creators, listeners and the growing influence of podcasting as a modern form of communication and entertainment.
The annual observance takes place every September 30. It began in 2014 as National Podcast Day in the United States and was renamed International Podcast Day in 2015 as participation expanded to podcast communities around the world.
Podcasts have evolved from primarily audio programs into a broader digital format that includes video podcasts, interviews, news, education, entertainment, business discussions and storytelling. Many creators now distribute their shows across podcast platforms as well as video services such as YouTube.
The official International Podcast Day organization says the day aims to connect podcasters, listeners, enthusiasts and industry professionals while highlighting the creative possibilities of the medium. Its organizers encourage people to discover new shows, share podcasts and participate in the global conversation using #InternationalPodcastDay.
