A serious fire accident in Hyderabad’s Gachibowli area has once again brought attention to poor fire safety standards in residential buildings. The incident occurred in the basement of a residential complex, where a blaze—suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit during electric vehicle charging—quickly spread to the upper floors.

At least 11 people were injured, though hospital reports suggest the number of affected individuals may be higher, with several still undergoing treatment. One resident suffered critical burn injuries, while others—including a young infant—were affected by severe smoke inhalation. The fire spread rapidly due to combustible materials stored in the cellar, including furniture, which intensified the flames.

Firefighters responded swiftly and managed to bring the blaze under control within about 20 minutes. However, the situation exposed major safety lapses in the building. Reports indicate that the apartment lacked essential fire safety systems such as sprinklers and proper ventilation. Residents were forced to flee to the terrace to escape the smoke and flames. Several vehicles parked in the basement were also destroyed.

Authorities have launched an investigation following complaints from residents. The incident comes not long after another deadly fire in Hyderabad, raising concerns about whether safety regulations are being properly enforced. Officials have stressed the importance of fire audits, proper storage practices, and strict adherence to safety norms—especially in high-rise buildings and areas where electric vehicles are charged.

This event has sparked broader discussions among citizens and officials about urban safety in rapidly growing cities like Hyderabad. Experts warn that without stricter enforcement and awareness, such incidents could become more frequent.
