A major new report from the UK House of Lords has warned that England could face severe water shortages in the coming decades unless urgent action is taken to improve water management and climate resilience. The report highlights growing concerns over rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, increasing population demand, and the worsening impacts of climate change on rivers and reservoirs.

Experts say England’s current water infrastructure is not fully prepared for future climate extremes. The report calls for expanded rainwater harvesting systems, better protection and restoration of rivers and wetlands, and stronger efforts to reduce water waste across households, agriculture, and industry. Environmental groups have also stressed the importance of restoring natural ecosystems that help retain water during dry periods and reduce flood risks during heavy rainfall.

Several regions in England have already experienced unusually dry conditions and reduced reservoir levels in recent years, raising fears of future restrictions on water use. Scientists warn that without immediate long-term planning, water scarcity could become a major environmental and economic challenge.

The report urges the government, local authorities, businesses, and communities to work together to secure sustainable water supplies and strengthen climate adaptation strategies before shortages become more severe.
