Tamil Nadu has recorded 16,334 dengue cases and nine deaths between January 1 and September 16, 2026, according to the state Health Department. Officials said the increase is seasonal and not considered unusual, particularly as weather conditions become more favourable for mosquito breeding.

The state recorded 15,688 dengue cases and 13 deaths during the same period in 2025, while 2024 saw 34,339 cases and 13 deaths. Health officials said dengue cases typically increase during the monsoon season, with Aedes mosquitoes responsible for transmitting the disease.

In Chennai, 3,404 fever cases were reported over a two-week period. Authorities have strengthened fever surveillance and mosquito-control activities, including house-to-house visits and efforts to identify and eliminate breeding sites. Around 3,697 workers have been engaged in fever-control measures in the city.

Health authorities are urging residents to prevent water from stagnating around homes and other areas, as stagnant water can provide breeding sites for mosquitoes. People experiencing persistent fever, severe body pain, headache, vomiting, rash or other warning symptoms have been advised to seek medical attention.
