An RTI activist has called for comprehensive safety inspections of shops in Kochi’s Broadway commercial area, citing growing concerns over fire hazards and regulatory violations. The appeal follows recent incidents that highlighted the vulnerability of densely packed commercial zones.
Broadway, one of Kochi’s busiest trading areas, houses hundreds of shops dealing in textiles, electronics, and wholesale goods. Many of these establishments operate in aging buildings with limited fire safety infrastructure, narrow access lanes, and inadequate emergency exits.
The activist urged local authorities to conduct immediate inspections focusing on electrical wiring, storage practices, fire extinguishers, and compliance with safety norms. He warned that a major fire incident could result in significant loss of life and property due to congestion and lack of preparedness.
Fire and rescue officials acknowledged the challenges of enforcing safety norms in older market areas but stressed the importance of regular audits. They stated that shop owners must cooperate with inspections and upgrade facilities where required.
Traders’ associations have responded cautiously, expressing willingness to improve safety while also raising concerns about operational disruptions. They have requested phased inspections and financial assistance for compliance upgrades.
Civic authorities indicated that a coordinated inspection drive involving fire services, electrical inspectors, and municipal officials is under consideration. Awareness programs may also be introduced to educate traders on fire prevention measures.
The call for inspections has reignited discussions on urban safety planning and the need to modernise traditional commercial districts without disrupting livelihoods.
