An avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre mountain in Nepalās Manang district, on Sunday, September 27, amid heavy rain and snowfall in the Himalayan region.
At least two people have died, while reports indicate that around 12ā14 Nepalese guides and support workers remain unaccounted for. The exact number has varied in early reports as authorities continue to establish the full situation at the remote base camp.
The avalanche buried a camp where climbers and support staff had been preparing for the autumn climbing season. The affected workers were associated with expedition companies including Himalayan Holidays Nepal and Imagine Nepal Treks and Expeditions.
A rescue team was flown by helicopter to the base camp on Monday. Experienced mountain guides began searching areas where the missing workers were believed to have been located. However, poor weather, heavy snowfall and difficult high-altitude conditions have made the operation challenging.
The two recovered bodies were being transported from Chame toward Kathmandu for further procedures. Authorities and rescue teams continue to search for the missing people.
The incident comes as Nepal faces widespread severe weather, with heavy rainfall, snowfall, landslides and flooding reported in several parts of the country.
