Competition over artificial intelligence is intensifying between the United States and China, with both countries seeking an advantage in advanced AI models, computing infrastructure, chips and AI security.

The two countries are also preparing for their first official bilateral discussions on AI safety, expected in mid-September. The talks are expected to address AI-driven cyberattacks, oversight of AI laboratories and concerns surrounding the transfer and use of advanced AI capabilities.

At the same time, China’s rapid development of AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing is attracting increasing international attention. Foreign investors and technology executives are travelling to China to study its AI and industrial ecosystem, particularly in cities such as Shenzhen.

The competition is becoming broader than simply developing better AI models. Semiconductors, data centres, electricity, data and access to advanced computing hardware are increasingly viewed as strategic assets. Analysts say this rivalry could influence global technology standards, investment and national security for years to come.
