Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi forces have captured Mayun Island, also known as Perim Island, in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, dramatically increasing concerns over the security of one of the world’s most important maritime routes. The takeover was reported after Yemeni government forces withdrew from the island.
Mayun is strategically important because it sits in the middle of the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait, dividing the waterway into two shipping lanes. The strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, making it a crucial route for ships traveling between Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
The capture follows a rapid Houthi offensive along Yemen’s western coast. The group has also seized the strategic port city of Mokha and other locations along the Red Sea coast. Reports indicate that the Houthis now have significantly greater control over the approaches to the Bab el-Mandeb.
The development has raised concerns about international shipping and energy supplies. The Bab el-Mandeb is particularly important for the movement of oil and commercial goods through the Red Sea and onward to the Suez Canal. Shipping companies could be forced to use longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope if security risks increase, adding substantial time and cost to journeys between Asia and Europe.
The situation is also affecting oil markets. Brent crude prices have risen above $100 a barrel, as traders assess the growing risks to Middle Eastern energy routes. Saudi Arabia has also temporarily shut its East-West oil pipeline following a separate drone attack, adding further pressure to global energy markets.
Saudi Arabia has sought U.S. assistance in responding to the Houthi advance, but Washington has reportedly avoided direct military strikes against the group while offering intelligence and targeting support.
The renewed fighting is also worsening Yemen’s humanitarian situation. Nearly 50,000 civilians have reportedly been displaced as fighting spreads along the Red Sea coast, with hundreds of people killed in the recent offensive.
The seizure of Mayun Island therefore represents more than another battlefield development in Yemen. It could have major consequences for global trade, shipping costs and energy prices if the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait deteriorates further.
