The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to add 29,108 police personnel over the next five years as part of a major effort to strengthen the state’s law-and-order system.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that 10,000 personnel, including 5,000 women, will be recruited this year. The state currently has a sanctioned police strength of 1,34,667, with a shortage of around 15,000 personnel.
The government has also allocated ₹212 crore for police modernisation, including measures aimed at improving equipment, infrastructure and operational capabilities. Special units, including the Singappen Special Force and Anti-Narcotics Force, are also expected to receive additional support.
Officials said the additional recruitment and modernisation measures are intended to improve police response, strengthen specialised units and enhance public safety across Tamil Nadu.
