The Tamil Nadu government has expanded the Pink Auto Scheme across Chennai, aiming to improve women’s safety while creating sustainable employment opportunities for women auto-rickshaw drivers. The initiative, launched as part of the state’s women empowerment programme, is being rolled out in additional areas of the city to provide safer and more reliable transportation for women, especially during early morning and late-night hours.
Under the scheme, pink-coloured auto-rickshaws are driven exclusively by women and are equipped with GPS tracking, emergency panic buttons, and digital fare meters to enhance passenger security. The vehicles are strategically deployed near metro stations, railway stations, bus terminals, educational institutions, hospitals, and commercial hubs where demand for safe public transport is high.
Government officials said the expansion follows a positive response from commuters and women drivers who have benefited from the initiative. In addition to improving safety, the programme offers financial assistance, driver training, and entrepreneurship support to women, enabling them to earn a stable livelihood while contributing to Chennai’s public transport network.
Authorities plan to introduce more Pink Autos in the coming months and integrate the service with digital booking platforms for easier access. The expanded scheme is expected to strengthen public confidence in women’s safety, encourage greater participation of women in the transport sector, and provide a secure travel option for thousands of passengers across Chennai.
