Kochi, August 5: Kochi Port has reported a steady increase in cargo handling, reflecting improving trade activity and strengthening its position as one of India’s key maritime gateways. Officials said higher volumes of container cargo, petroleum products, fertilizers, chemicals, and general cargo have contributed to the port’s improved performance during the current financial year.
The growth has been driven by increased shipping activity at the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT), Vallarpadam, along with rising demand for import and export services from industries across Kerala and neighbouring states. Port authorities noted that improved operational efficiency, better vessel turnaround times, and enhanced logistics infrastructure have helped accommodate higher cargo volumes.
The port continues to play a vital role in handling a wide range of commodities, including containerized cargo, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), crude oil, fertilizers, food products, engineering goods, and industrial raw materials. Trade experts believe the increase in cargo movement reflects growing confidence among exporters and importers as global supply chains continue to stabilize.
Officials also highlighted ongoing investments in modern port infrastructure, digital cargo management systems, and multimodal connectivity. Improved road, rail, and inland waterway links have strengthened Kochi Port’s ability to serve industries across southern India while reducing logistics costs and improving cargo movement efficiency.
Industry representatives said the port’s performance is expected to improve further as shipping lines expand services and new logistics projects become operational. Increased cargo handling is also expected to generate additional employment opportunities in shipping, warehousing, transportation, customs services, and related maritime sectors.
The growth at Kochi Port comes at a time when India’s major ports have collectively recorded higher cargo throughput during the current financial year, reflecting increasing domestic economic activity and stronger international trade. Maritime analysts believe Kochi is well positioned to benefit from this trend because of its strategic location on international shipping routes and its modern container transshipment facilities.
Port officials expressed confidence that continued infrastructure upgrades, improved operational efficiency, and stronger collaboration with logistics partners will help sustain the growth momentum. They said Kochi Port remains committed to enhancing trade competitiveness, supporting exporters, and reinforcing Kerala’s role as a leading maritime and logistics hub on India’s southwest coast.
