Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited the under-construction 400 million litres per day (MLD) Perur Desalination Plant in Chengalpattu district on Monday, reviewing the progress of one of Chennai’s most significant water infrastructure projects. During the inspection, the Chief Minister directed officials to complete the project within the scheduled timeline to help meet the city’s rapidly growing demand for drinking water.
The Perur desalination plant, being developed at an estimated cost of ₹5,814.57 crore, is expected to become one of the largest seawater desalination facilities in Asia. Once operational, it will supply an additional 400 MLD of treated drinking water to Chennai, Tambaram, and nearby municipalities, benefiting more than 22 lakh residents.
During his visit, the Chief Minister inspected key sections of the project, including the intake structure, reverse osmosis (RO) building, lamella clarifier, dissolved air flotation system, product water tanks, and water transmission infrastructure. He also reviewed ongoing construction works and emphasized the importance of maintaining high quality standards and ensuring timely completion.
The Perur project is a major step in strengthening Chennai’s long-term water security. By reducing dependence on rainfall and reservoirs, the desalination plant is expected to provide a reliable source of potable water, helping the city better withstand droughts and future climate-related water shortages.
