The Tamil film industry is mourning the loss of legendary filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja, who passed away at the age of 84 following age-related health complications. Widely regarded as one of the most influential directors in Indian cinema, Bharathiraja transformed Tamil filmmaking by bringing realistic rural stories and authentic village settings to the big screen.
As a mark of respect, the Tamil film industry suspended all shooting activities on June 11. Film organizations, actors, directors, technicians, and producers observed a day of mourning, while thousands of fans gathered to pay their final respects.

The Tamil Nadu government announced that Bharathiraja would be accorded full state honors. His mortal remains were taken to his hometown of Theni, where family members, colleagues, political leaders, and admirers gathered for his final journey.
