Authorities have announced that the water level of the Malankara Dam will be temporarily lowered to facilitate emergency shutter repair work, prompting officials to issue alerts for residents living along nearby riverbanks and low-lying areas. The precautionary measure comes ahead of the expected monsoon intensification across Kerala.

According to irrigation department officials, technical issues were identified in one of the dam shutters during routine inspections, making immediate repair work necessary to ensure the safety and stability of the structure before heavy rainfall increases water inflow into the reservoir. Authorities stated that controlled water discharge operations would be carried out in phases over the next few days.

Residents living near downstream river areas have been advised to remain cautious and avoid entering riverbanks, flooded zones, and water channels during the repair period. Local administrations, disaster management teams, police, and fire force units have also been placed on alert to monitor the situation and respond quickly if water levels rise unexpectedly.

Officials clarified that the water release is being conducted under strict monitoring and there is currently no major threat to public safety. However, authorities urged fishermen, farmers, and residents near riverside settlements to closely follow official instructions and weather updates.

The Irrigation Department stated that warning notices have been issued to local panchayats and district authorities to ensure public awareness regarding possible fluctuations in river water levels. Emergency response systems and communication channels have also been activated as a precautionary measure.

The repair work is considered critical as Kerala prepares for the early arrival of the southwest monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department already issuing heavy rain alerts in several districts. Experts noted that timely maintenance of dams and shutters is essential to prevent technical failures during peak monsoon periods.

Meanwhile, local residents expressed concern about possible flooding and requested continuous updates from authorities regarding discharge schedules and repair progress. Officials assured that all necessary safety protocols are being followed and the situation will remain under constant observation until the repair work is completed successfully.
