Ukraine is facing renewed political pressure after Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko resigned amid a major corruption investigation involving officials in his office. Kravchenko submitted his resignation on September 7, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it would be sent to parliament for approval.

The investigation is being conducted by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO). Investigators allege that a senior official within the prosecutor’s office helped protect a network of fraudulent call centres and facilitated money laundering.

According to investigators, the illegal call centres allegedly targeted victims in Ukraine and other countries by posing as banks, law-enforcement agencies and investment advisers. Authorities say substantial amounts of money were paid as bribes to protect the operations.

Kravchenko has denied involvement in the alleged scheme, saying his resignation was intended to prevent his position from becoming part of a political conflict. He has not been charged or named as a suspect in the investigation.

The scandal comes at a difficult time for President Zelenskyy, as Ukraine continues its war with Russia while seeking continued Western military and financial support. Anti-corruption reforms are also particularly important to Kyiv’s ambitions for European Union membership.

The resignation has therefore increased pressure on the Ukrainian government to demonstrate transparency and strengthen the independence of its anti-corruption institutions.
