Thousands of commuters experienced delays on Chennai’s busy Beach–Tambaram suburban rail corridor after railway staff detected a crack in the track near Nungambakkam railway station during the morning peak hours. As a safety precaution, Southern Railway immediately imposed speed restrictions and temporarily regulated train movements while engineers carried out emergency repair work.
The disruption affected several Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) services, resulting in delays of up to 20–30 minutes on the suburban network. Platforms at major stations became crowded as office-goers and students waited for delayed trains. Railway officials deployed maintenance teams to replace the damaged section of track and continuously monitored operations to ensure passenger safety.
Southern Railway confirmed that the repairs were completed later in the day, allowing services to gradually return to normal. Officials advised passengers to check the latest train updates before travelling and reiterated that routine track inspections are essential to prevent accidents and maintain the safety of Chennai’s suburban railway network.
