India is celebrating Teachers’ Day today, September 5, with schools and educational institutions honouring teachers for their contribution to education and society. The day is observed every year on September 5, the birth anniversary of former Indian President and philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
Teachers’ Day is marked by cultural programmes, speeches, competitions, appreciation ceremonies and special activities organised by students. Many schools use the occasion to recognise teachers who have made a meaningful difference in students’ academic and personal development.
A major national event is also taking place this year, with President Droupadi Murmu scheduled to present the National Teachers’ Awards to 48 exemplary school teachers. The awards recognise educators for their dedication, innovative teaching practices and contribution to students and communities.
The occasion also highlights the changing role of teachers in modern education. Beyond classroom teaching, educators increasingly help students develop digital skills, critical thinking, creativity and social responsibility.
Teachers’ Day remains one of India’s important education-related observances, providing students an opportunity to express gratitude to the people who help shape their future
