Chennai commuters faced major inconvenience on Thursday morning after a signal failure near Perambur railway station disrupted suburban train services on the busy Chennai Central–Arakkonam corridor. The glitch affected train movement between Villivakkam and Perambur during peak office hours.
According to Southern Railway officials, the technical fault was detected around 5.20 am, leading to delays of nearly 20 to 30 minutes for several electric multiple unit (EMU) services heading towards Chennai Central. At least three suburban trains from the Arakkonam side were affected.
Railway authorities stated that engineers rectified the signal problem by around 5.50 am. However, services took nearly another hour to return to normal schedules, causing overcrowding at stations and inconvenience to daily passengers.
Several commuters expressed frustration over repeated delays in recent weeks. Passengers travelling from Avadi, Pattabiram, and Tiruvallur said suburban services have become increasingly unreliable during morning peak hours.
