The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rain and thunderstorm alerts for parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai and surrounding districts, as pre-monsoon weather activity intensifies across the state. Officials said light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is expected over the next few days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai, the city is likely to experience partly cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rain while temperatures may remain around 35°C, offering slight relief from the ongoing summer heat.

The IMD has also warned of isolated heavy rainfall in several Tamil Nadu districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, and Theni on May 15 and 16. The weather system is linked to a low-pressure area developing over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka.

Weather officials advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid waterlogged areas during heavy showers. Fishermen along the Tamil Nadu coast have also been asked to closely monitor weather bulletins before venturing into the sea.
