Hyderabad is currently experiencing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels and expected to remain between 41°C and 44°C in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts, warning residents about the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat. Weather experts have indicated that dry winds and clear skies are contributing to the sharp rise in daytime temperatures, making conditions particularly harsh during the afternoon hours.
In response to the escalating situation, the Telangana state government has placed all public health systems on high alert. Hospitals and primary health centers across the city have been instructed to prepare for a likely surge in cases related to heat exposure, including heatstroke, dehydration, exhaustion, and fainting. Medical authorities have ensured the availability of essential supplies such as IV fluids, ORS packets, cooling equipment, and emergency beds. Special teams of healthcare workers, including ASHA and Anganwadi staff, are actively working in vulnerable communities to spread awareness and distribute hydration supplements.
Authorities have also identified high-risk groups, including elderly citizens, children, pregnant women, and outdoor laborers, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. To reduce risk, the government is advising residents to stay indoors during peak hours (typically between 12 PM and 4 PM), drink plenty of water, and wear light, breathable clothing. Schools, construction sites, and offices are being encouraged to modify their schedules to minimize outdoor exposure.
Additionally, civic bodies are taking preventive steps such as setting up water kiosks in busy public areas, increasing green cover initiatives, and ensuring continuous water supply across neighborhoods. Traffic police and municipal workers are being provided with protective gear and frequent breaks to cope with the heat.
Experts warn that such extreme weather events may become more frequent due to changing climate patterns. Citizens are urged to remain cautious, follow official advisories, and look out for early symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or nausea. Immediate medical attention is recommended if such symptoms occur, as timely intervention can prevent serious complications.
