The seafood export sector has emerged as one of the strongest contributors to the economy of Kochi, following India’s record-breaking marine export performance during the 2025–26 financial year. According to data released by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), India exported nearly 19.72 lakh metric tonnes of seafood worth approximately ₹73,890 crore ($8.46 billion), marking the highest-ever export value and volume recorded by the sector.
Kochi, one of the country’s leading seafood export hubs, played a significant role in this achievement through its major fishing harbor, seafood processing units, cold storage infrastructure, export companies, and port facilities. Industry experts noted that Kochi continues to remain a key center for marine exports, supporting thousands of jobs across fishing, processing, transportation, packaging, logistics, and international trade.
Frozen shrimp remained the biggest contributor to export earnings, accounting for more than two-thirds of India’s total seafood export revenue. Strong demand from international markets including China, the European Union, Southeast Asia, and Japan helped offset a decline in exports to the United States. Exports to China and European markets recorded significant growth during the financial year, helping sustain the sector’s momentum.
Officials stated that Kochi’s seafood industry has benefited from improved processing technology, expanding export markets, better cold-chain facilities, and increased value-added seafood production. The city is home to several seafood exporters and also hosts important institutions such as the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), which supports export promotion and industry development.
Business leaders believe the sector’s growth is generating substantial employment opportunities for fishermen, processing workers, logistics operators, exporters, and small-scale marine businesses across Kerala’s coastal regions. Industry representatives have also emphasized the importance of market diversification, sustainability standards, and value-added seafood products to maintain long-term export growth.
With Kochi continuing to strengthen its position as a major marine export gateway, experts expect the seafood industry to remain one of the city’s most important economic drivers in the coming years. Increased global demand, expanding international trade networks, and ongoing infrastructure improvements are expected to further boost Kochi’s role in India’s seafood export sector.
