Rescue teams in Nepal are continuing operations after an avalanche struck the Himlung Himal base-camp area in Manang district. Reports on September 28 said two bodies had been recovered while several people remained missing following the incident.
The avalanche has created difficult conditions for rescue personnel working in a high-altitude environment. Search operations in mountainous areas are particularly challenging because of snow, unstable terrain, limited visibility and the risk of additional avalanches.
Himlung Himal is located in Nepal’s mountainous region and attracts climbers and expedition groups. Base camps are commonly used by mountaineers as staging areas before attempting higher sections of a mountain.
Following the avalanche, rescue teams began searching affected areas for people who could still be trapped under snow or debris. Authorities and rescue personnel are working to establish the exact number of people affected and identify those who remain unaccounted for.
Avalanches are among the major hazards faced by mountaineers in the Himalayas, particularly during periods of changing weather and unstable snow conditions.
