Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns about the growing use of technology and critical minerals as tools of geopolitical pressure during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Modi said that countries should work together to ensure that access to important technologies and strategic resources remains fair and inclusive.
Critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements are increasingly important for electric vehicles, batteries, renewable-energy systems, electronics and advanced defence equipment. Because these resources are concentrated in a limited number of countries, disruptions to their supply chains could affect industries around the world.
Modi’s remarks come as BRICS members discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in technology, trade and economic development. India has been pushing for greater collaboration among developing economies and for more resilient global supply chains.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of ensuring that technological progress benefits developing nations rather than creating new forms of inequality. The discussion is particularly significant as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and clean-energy technologies become increasingly important to national economies.
