Thiruvananthapuram, July 28: In a major step toward modernizing agriculture, the Kerala government has begun deploying ANNAM.AI Smart Weather Stations across the state as part of its 100-day action plan to promote climate-smart farming. The initiative is designed to provide farmers with hyperlocal, real-time weather information, enabling them to make better decisions and reduce the impact of unpredictable weather on crop production.

Developed in collaboration with IIT Ropar, the ANNAM.AI system uses artificial intelligence to monitor weather conditions at a highly localized level. The stations collect data on rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed, solar radiation, and soil moisture, offering precise weather forecasts tailored to individual farming regions. This information will help farmers plan sowing, irrigation, fertilizer application, pest control, and harvesting more effectively.

Officials say the project is particularly beneficial for Kerala, where changing monsoon patterns and diverse geographical conditions often create significant challenges for agriculture. Since a large percentage of farms in the state are small holdings, access to accurate, location-specific weather information is expected to improve productivity while reducing unnecessary water usage and crop losses.

The AI-powered weather network is also expected to strengthen disaster preparedness by providing early warnings about adverse weather conditions. In addition, the collected data will support agricultural research, improve climate monitoring, and contribute to long-term planning for sustainable farming practices.

The Kerala government believes the initiative will encourage precision farming and digital agriculture, helping farmers adapt to climate change while improving yields and resource efficiency. As the rollout progresses, ANNAM.AI is expected to become an important tool in transforming Kerala’s agricultural sector into a more resilient and technology-driven ecosystem.
