Thiruvananthapuram, July 28: In a major step towards promoting sustainable tourism, the Kerala Tourism Department has launched the ‘Green Marshal’ Initiative, a new programme aimed at maintaining cleanliness and protecting the environment at popular tourist destinations across the state.
Under the initiative, specially trained Green Marshals will be deployed at major tourist spots, including beaches, hill stations, waterfalls, heritage sites, and ecotourism destinations. Their primary responsibility will be to educate visitors about responsible tourism practices, discourage littering, and ensure that public spaces remain clean and environmentally friendly.
The Green Marshals will work closely with local self-government bodies, tourism officials, and waste management agencies to monitor tourist activities and encourage proper disposal of waste. They will also spread awareness about reducing the use of single-use plastics and protecting Kerala’s natural ecosystems.
Tourism Department officials said the programme is part of the state’s broader vision to strengthen Responsible Tourism (RT) and preserve Kerala’s reputation as one of India’s leading eco-friendly travel destinations. The initiative aims to create a cleaner and safer environment while encouraging both domestic and international tourists to adopt sustainable travel habits.
Authorities believe that the Green Marshal Initiative will not only improve the visitor experience but also help conserve Kerala’s rich biodiversity and scenic beauty for future generations. The programme is expected to be expanded to more tourist destinations in phases, with regular awareness campaigns and community participation playing a key role in its success.
The Kerala Tourism Department has urged tourists, local communities, and tourism businesses to cooperate with Green Marshals and contribute towards building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable tourism sector across the state.
