Thousands of Israeli nationalists marched through Jerusalem’s Old City on Thursday during the annual Jerusalem Day celebrations, amid heightened tensions between Israeli groups and Palestinian residents. Heavy police deployment was seen across the city, especially near Damascus Gate and the Muslim Quarter.

Jerusalem Day commemorates Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War. While many Israelis view the event as a celebration of national unity, Palestinians see the marches as provocative because they pass through predominantly Palestinian neighborhoods in the Old City.

Several reports said some ultranationalist groups shouted anti-Arab slogans during the procession, leading to clashes and fears of violence. Palestinian shopkeepers closed businesses early, and many residents stayed indoors as security forces restricted movement in sensitive areas.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir also visited the Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa compound before the march, further increasing tensions around the holy site revered by both Muslims and Jews.

The situation in Jerusalem remains closely watched internationally, as the city continues to be one of the most sensitive flashpoints in the long-running Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
