India’s State of Environment 2026 report has raised serious concerns about the growing impact of climate change and environmental degradation across the country. The report highlights a sharp increase in extreme weather events such as floods, heatwaves, landslides, cyclones, and droughts over the past year. Several states experienced unusually heavy rainfall and flash floods, causing damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods.
The report also warns that urban areas are becoming more vulnerable to flooding due to poor drainage systems, rapid construction, and the loss of wetlands and green spaces. Scientists say climate change is intensifying rainfall patterns, making disasters more frequent and unpredictable.
Another major concern is the lack of effective pollution monitoring systems in many regions. Large parts of the country still do not have adequate air and water quality monitoring stations, making it difficult to assess the real extent of pollution and its health impacts. Experts have urged authorities to improve environmental data collection, strengthen disaster preparedness, and adopt sustainable development policies.
The report stresses that immediate action is necessary to reduce climate risks and protect both ecosystems and public health in the coming years.
