Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The leaders discussed regional developments and the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and diplomacy.

Modi reiterated India’s position that conflicts should be addressed through peaceful negotiations and diplomatic engagement. The discussion comes at a time when developments in the Middle East continue to have implications for international trade, energy supplies and regional security.

India has traditionally maintained diplomatic relations with countries across different sides of major geopolitical disputes. Its relationship with Iran is particularly important because of connectivity, energy interests and India’s broader engagement with West and Central Asia.

During the meeting, Modi also emphasised the importance of regional stability, freedom of movement and trade, and the safety and well-being of sailors.

The two leaders’ discussions are being closely watched because India is seeking to maintain constructive relations with countries in the region while supporting diplomatic solutions to conflicts.

The meeting also demonstrates how the BRICS summit is providing India with opportunities to conduct several bilateral discussions alongside the main multilateral event
