Kerala is witnessing another spell of intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for six districts on Monday, September 21, 2026. The warning covers Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur, where heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected.
According to the weather department, isolated areas in the affected districts could receive 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong surface winds of up to 40 kmph are also possible.
The warning comes amid reports of rain-related incidents in parts of the state. In Malappuram, a flash flood in the Kottapuzha River swept away six people, with five deaths reported and rescue operations continuing for the missing person.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, landslides and waterlogging. People living near rivers, streams and steep slopes have been advised to remain alert as rainfall can cause water levels to rise rapidly.
The continuing rain is also expected to affect road travel and normal activities in vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to follow official weather and disaster-management updates and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
