The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has begun using drones to spray mosquito larvicide over the Cooum River as part of intensified measures to control mosquito breeding and prevent the spread of dengue in the city.

The trial was conducted on Tuesday near the Madras Medical College students’ hostel, at the point where the North Buckingham Canal meets the Cooum. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran inspected the operation. The civic body plans to use drones in waterways wider than 30 metres, where conventional manual spraying can be difficult.

The drone-based operation will also cover sections of the Cooum, Adyar River and Buckingham Canal. According to GCC officials, the technology had been used previously and is being brought back to improve mosquito-control operations in larger water bodies.
